Statement on penalty call in NWSL match

June 25, 2013

The below statement was made by the Professional Referee Organization following the penalty call by Margaret Domka in the NWSL match between Seattle Reign and Portland Thorns.

The match ended 1-0 to the Thorns with Christine Sinclair converting the 84th-minute penalty kick.

“After a pass is made from Portland Thorns' Christine Sinclair to Allie Long, referee Margaret Domka witnessed Seattle Reign defender Kristen Meier hold Long inside the penalty area to prevent her from gaining possession of the ball, and called a penalty kick.

“The available video evidence does not show this hold to have significantly impacted Long's ability to play the ball prior to being cleared by the Seattle defense, and play should have been allowed to continue.”
