Silviu Petrescu receives Canadian Soccer Association award

Feb 25, 2014

Professional Referee Organization official Silviu Petrescu has received a Canadian Soccer Association award for recognition of his time as a FIFA referee.

The 45-year-old was added to the FIFA list in 2002, and in the same year took charge of a match between Toronto Lynx and 1860 Munich.

Petrescu, whose father was a referee in Romania in the 1980s, blew the whistle at the FIFA U20 World Cup in 2007 and has previously been assigned to the Quarter-Finals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

In 2012, he became the first Canadian to win the MLS Referee of the Year award, having refereed the MLS Cup during that season.

After Petrescu's most recent international game, Canadian Soccer Association Head of Refereeing, Tiger Liu, said: “Silviu has shown professionalism both on and off the field.

“He is a role model for the National Referee Program and we thank him for his dedication to Canadian soccer.”
