Silviu Petrescu believes Saturday’s MLS Cup final will be the biggest moment of his officiating career to date.
The 44-year-old has been assigned to referee the match between LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo at The Home Depot Center and he’s looking forward to the showpiece event of the MLS calendar.
“I have done some big games, but this is going to be the biggest one,” he told proreferees.com.
“I was surprised with the appointment for the MLS Cup but I’m very delighted, of course.
“It will be the first time I’ve refereed the match and the first time a Canadian has refereed it.”
The Canadian-based official began his career in the late 1980s and this season has been one of his finest.
The clubs, players and the media recently acknowledged just how good he has been by naming him as the MLS Referee of the Year. His impressive campaign will be wrapped up with the Cup final, a game he believes carries a lot of pressure but one he is ready for.
“It was a big honour to win the MLS Referee of the Year, I was very delighted to receive the award. My father, who was an official in Romania, is very proud of me.
“There’s lots of pressure involved in the final but I’m happy. There will be plenty of eyes focused on this game but it’s not just pressure on the officials, there’s pressure on the players and the management staff, too.
“Physically, I’m still training as we only finished the MLS season a couple of weeks ago. I maintain my fitness because of my referee status.
“Mentally, I’m doing my research on the teams to be prepared. It’s a big game for everybody and it’s important I’m prepared.
“I have refereed these two teams before, though, and they are really good sides with talented players, and some real superstars. It’s going to be a big show.”
Fellow Canadians Daniel Belleau and Darren Clark, two officials Petrescu knows well, will assist him in the match, while Hilario Grajeda will be the 4th official.
Belleau and Clark partnered Petrescu when he refereed the Conference Knock Out Round match between the Galaxy and Vancouver Whitecaps on November 1st.
“Those two gentlemen [Belleau and Clark] have been with me for many games and we know each other very well, and I am very pleased to have a very experienced 4th official in Hilario [Grajeda].
“It’s very important to have the understanding with each other, like we have. We communicate well and support each other.
“It’s a big game for all of us.”
