PRO's Dave Gantar says he has surpassed all expectations in his Movember fundraising efforts.
The Canadian referee, who has officiated 46 MLS games during his career, is one of a number of PRO officials growing a moustache in support of Movember, which helps raise funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health.
Gantar has raised over $2,000 and leads the way on the PRO Movember page after two-thirds of the month.
“I’ve had a big rush in the last week or so,” Gantar acknowledged.
“Competition on this is so good – we’re all pushing each other to raise more money but I never thought I would have raised the most out of the PRO participants at this point.”
Gantar, who is participating in Movember for the first time, is certainly enjoying watching his facial hair flourish but he openly admits he doubted his ability to grow a healthy moustache.
And he’s been on the receiving end of some friendly taunts from fellow referee Chris Penso in recent weeks.
“Movember is really fun – you turn a lot of heads because it’s not a normal occurrence. I’ve got the handlebar moustache going on and it’s not my regular look at all.
“It’s very rare for me to grow a moustache or a goatee so this is the first time I can say I’ve actually developed it.
“I have a couple of ideas to try and raise even more money. I am debating coloring my moustache. My wife keeps telling me I look more and more like a trucker, but she is the one who told me to have a handlebar moustache so I’m not changing it.
“Ricardo Salazar and I officiated the Brazil vs. Honduras game on Saturday November 16th and we got a lot of comments from players and coaches."
Gantar was the referee and, with his crew, including Salazar, all sporting moustaches, they were self-named the 'Mo Crew'.
That international at the Sun Life Stadium attracted a crowd of over 71,000 spectators - a record attendance for a soccer game in the state of Florida.
With nine days left to run in Movember, the 38-year-old's 'stache still has time to grow further, and he has his sights firmly set on raising as much money as possible for a worthy cause.
PRO is donating $25 to each participant on the PRO Official and Assessor lists. Additionally, PRO donated to every non-PRO participant who had signed up to the PRO Movember page by November 1st.
