Major League Soccer and PRO are to continue their support of the video assistant referee experiment in New York this week.
A second global workshop, organised by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), will be taking place at Red Bull Arena from July 19 to 21 as steps continue towards implementing video referees in MLS.
The workshop comes after May's kick-off meeting in the Netherlands, where it was confirmed that MLS would be among the first leagues in the world to participate in the developing and testing of the new FIFA initiative, with PRO's General Manager Peter Walton calling it an “extremely important and exciting phase of the game.”
The focus will be on the use of VARs in a “live” environment. Through presentations and practical demonstrations in match settings at Red Bull Arena, attendees will learn more about how the referees should communicate with each other to take decisions on the four match-changing incidents included in the experiment protocol.
Also on the agenda is referee education, which is a crucial part of the current preparation phase as The IFAB looks to guide all participants to achieve consistent trials.
