2014 MLS Cup Playoffs - In focus: Conference Championship 1st leg referees

Nov 20, 2014

PRO duo Allen Chapman and Kevin Stott will be the men in the middle when the MLS Conference Championship series get under way with the first legs this weekend.

Eastern Conference Championship first leg

Chapman will be at Red Bull Arena where New York Red Bulls welcome New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference (1.30pm ET).

The referee, who made his professional debut in 2012, took charge of 17 MLS regular season games before being assigned to the 1-1 draw between FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference Semifinal first leg at the Toyota Stadium.

One of his 17 assignments this year included Red Bulls versus Revolution at Red Bull Arena in early August, when goals from Dax McCarty and Bradley Wright-Phillips saw the home side take the points in a 2-1 scoreline.

On Saturday, Craig Lowry and Jonathan Johnson, who have 28 games between them this season, will run the line as the two assistant referees. Chris Penso will be on fourth official duties. .

Western Conference Championship first leg

Experienced referee Stott will be in the middle when LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders come together for the first leg of the Western Conference Championship series on Saturday (5pm ET).

Over the year, Stott took charge of 16 MLS games including three Galaxy matches – against Portland Timbers and D.C. United in August and versus FC Dallas in September - and one involving the Sounders, in September when they faced Real Salt Lake.

This will be Stott's first outing in the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs but he has vast experience of the postseason showdown, including three center assignments for the MLS Cup Final.

In 2013, the 47-year-old oversaw Galaxy's first leg against RSL in the Western Conference Semifinal, and was also assigned to the opening match of the Eastern Conference Championship series between Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City.

Stott, who was named MLS Referee of the Year in 2010, will be assisted at StubHub Center this weekend by Adam Wienckowski and four-time MLS Cup Final AR Greg Barkey. Like the center referee, the two ARs are vastly experienced and have worked 32 games between them in 2014 alone.

The fourth official on the touchline will be Ricardo Salazar.
