Mark Geiger and Paul Scott named MLS Referee and Assistant Referee of the Year

Nov 25, 2014

Mark Geiger has been voted as the MLS Referee of the Year and Paul Scott has been voted as MLS Assistant Referee of the Year.

Geiger, who has won the accolade for the second time in his career, has had a stand-out year, officiating 13 MLS games prior to today's announcement, and also playing a role in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

In Brazil he officiated two games in the group stages – Colombia's face-off with Greece and Spain’s clash against Chile. His success in the preliminary rounds earned him a call-up to the last-16 game between France and Nigeria, making him the first US referee to take charge of a World Cup knockout round tie.

The New Jersey-native was then handed fourth official duties for the historic semifinal between Brazil and Germany, which saw the hosts crash out to a 7-1 defeat.

Jair Marrufo and Alan Kelly were the two other PRO center officials nominated for the award.

Assistant Referee of the Year Paul Scott has been assigned to 17 MLS games so far in what has been a successful 2014.

He most recently ran the line in the MLS Cup Playoffs Western Conference semifinal first leg at Toyota Stadium in the match-up between FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders.

Peter Manikowski and Adam Wienckowski were the two other PRO ARs vying for the award.
