Namaste from India! It has been a week since our last update and there is so much to bring you up to speed on.
After a Monday recovery session split between the pool and the beach, we took charge of our second match, Chennaiyin FC at FC Goa last Wednesday. It was a fantastic atmosphere with a little over 20,000 fans packed into a gorgeous venue in Fatorda, Goa.
The match finished 2-1 in favor of the visiting team - the first win for an away team in the ISL. Another first from this game was the scoring of a goal by an Indian player, Balwant Singh of Chennaiyin FC. We were thrilled to be a part of such special moments in the league.
After our match in Goa we returned to where our Indian journey began - Mumbai. Mumbai is a key market for the league and Mumbai City FC is hosting their games in the newly renovated D.Y. Patil Stadium, where we were scheduled to take charge of our third match on Saturday and first ever soccer game in the stadium which has only ever played host to cricket.
Mumbai City FC were opening the ground against FC Pune City and looking to rebound from their loss against Atletico de Kolkata, which was the opening game that we were in charge of. After two cautions in the first four minutes and another four in the second half, Mumbai City FC eventually took care of Pune, 5-0, with the ISL seeing its first hat-trick courtesy of Andre Moritz.
Having taken charge of three of the first six matches in the ISL, Eric, Mark and I are finally enjoying a few extra days of rest here in Mumbai. Our assessor from the last game, Mr. Suresh Srinivasan, has stayed along as well and will travel with us to Goa tomorrow for a match on Thursday.
He and our local chaperone, Juhi, were kind enough to take us on a short tour of the area of town we are staying in, including the historic Gateway of India monument built in 1924. The friendly and outgoing hospitality never ceases to amaze us.
We look forward to the days ahead, especially with Diwali (meaning festival of lights), one of India’s largest holidays, starting Wednesday.
Happy Diwali from Chris, Eric and Mark!
Next Super League assignment: Penso, Boria and Cahen will officiate FC Goa versus Atletico de Kolkata on Thursday, October 23
